Why does the advent wreath have 4 candles? Why are there 3 purple and 1 pink?

Advent Wreaths are a tradition used by Christians to mark the passage of the 4 weeks of Advent. Its usual form is of a horizontal evergreen wreath holding four candles. Starting during the first week of Advent, a candle is lit while prayers are said. An additional candle is lit during each of the following weeks until all four candles are lit during the last week before Christmas.

There are several interpretations of the symbolism of the Advent wreath. The underlying symbolism is the accumulation of light as an expression of the growing anticipation of the birth of Jesus Christ, who is seen as "the light of the world" in Christian faith.

The circular wreath is meant to represent God's eternity as it has no beginning or end. The evergreens are also a symbol of everlasting life.

Advent wreath in the Catholic liturgyIn the Catholic tradition, three of the candles are violet-colored, and one is rose-colored. The violet candles symbolize faithful expectation, and the rose candle symbolizes joy and hope.

One violet candle is lit on the first evening of Advent (a Sunday). On successive Sundays, the second violet candle is added, then the rose candle on Gaudete Sunday, and finally, the third violet candle. On Gaudete Sunday rose coloured vestments may be worn instead of violet which is prescribed for every day in the season of Advent. In churches which have an Advent wreath, the rose coloured candle is lit in addition to two of the violet coloured candles which represent the first two Sundays of Advent. During the otherwise penitential season of Advent, the readings on the third Sunday emphasize the joyous anticipation of the Lord's coming.

Some wreaths have a larger, central fifth candle (generally white), which is lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day to signify Christ's birth. In the traditions that use five candles, the first candle is called the Candle of Hope and represents the Patriarchs of the faith. The second candle, the Candle of Peace, represents the prophets who foretold of Jesus' birth. The third candle is the Candle of Love and represents John the Baptist who came to prepare the way for Christ. The fourth candle is called the Candle of Joy and represents Mary, the mother of Jesus. The fifth and final candle, which is usually white, represents Jesus Christ and is lit on Christmas Day.

Why does the advent wreath have 4 candles? Why are there 3 purple and 1 pink?
HI there.. being Catholic I can answer this easy.

The advent wreath has four candles for the four Sundays before Christmas Day.

They represent Mary's (and Joseph's) Journy towards that day.

It starts with the imaculate conception and ends with the Sunday before Christmas Day.

The purple Candles are Lit the first 3 Sundays...and on the Last Sunday the Pink one is lit.. and then Christmas comes.

I think they pink Pink.. because Mary is often refered to as a Rose.. being so delicate and gentle.

It Readys the way of the Lord.

Hope this helps you.

God Bless and Merry Christmas!

Reply:"The wreath is made of various evergreens, signifying continuous life." "The circle of the wreath, which has no beginning or end, symbolizes the eternity of God, the immortality of the soul, and the everlasting life found in Christ. All together, the wreath of evergreens depicts the immortality of our soul and the new, everlasting life. "

"The four candles represent the four weeks of Advent. A tradition is that each week represents one thousand years, to sum to the 4,000 years from Adam and Eve until the Birth of the Savior. Three candles are purple and one is rose. The purple candles in particular symbolize the prayer, penance, and preparatory sacrifices and goods works undertaken at this time. The rose candle is lit on the third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday, when the priest also wears rose vestments at Mass; Gaudete Sunday is the Sunday of rejoicing, because the faithful have arrived at the midpoint of Advent, when their preparation is now half over and they are close to Christmas. The progressive lighting of the candles symbolizes the expectation and hope surrounding our Lord’s first coming into the world and the anticipation of His second coming to judge the living and the dead."

Reply:The purple/violet candles represent faithful expectation and the rose/pink one respresents joy and hope. The 3 purple candles are lit first leading up to the pink candle, so it means the faithful expectation of joy and hope. The colors also match the robes worn by priests during the Sundays of Advent.

Specifically, in some traditions the first candle is often called the prophet's candle, and is meant to signify the hope of Jesus' arrival. The second is generally called the Bethlehem candle, reminding Christians that God appeared to them in a humble manner; Bethlehem was located in the territory of one of the least powerful tribes of Israel. The third candle is the shepherds' candle, representing the joy that more than half of Advent is over. The final candle is the angels' candle, symbolizing their peace and the message of good news that they offer.

Also, the candles are placed in a circular wreath to symbolize God's eternity, as it has no beginning and no end.
Reply:they all have a meaning. the first two are sad candles, the pink is a joy candle because the christ is almost ehre, and the last one is a celebration.
