The salad was a pink molded salad (she always made in in a wreath mold). But it was a strawberry milk color, with nuts?
My grandmother's parents came from Germany, and this was a big hit at the Christmas party which had many of our relatives who had German ties... however Grandmother died 30 years ago, and no one in the family has the recipe.
My grandmother used to make a pink salad at Christmas does anyone know what it was?
I really have no idea what the one she made is, but here is a nice one:
16 ounces cranberry sauce
OR
16 oz cherry pie filling
20 ounces, crushed pineapple, drained
8 oz or 12 ounces whipped topping
14 oz sweetened condensed milk
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/4 cup pecans (can be halves or pieces)
Mix together. [ or mix all but nuts together - sprinkle nuts on top].Freeze. Remove from freezer 30 minutes before serving.
Reply:My family makes this salad. This recipe does not have nuts ,but I think pecans might be nice in it. However, I'm not sure it would set in a mold.
Buttermilk Salad
1 lg can crushed pineapple
1 lg pkg peach or strawberry jello
1 3/4 cups buttermilk
1 lg cool whip
Heat pineapple to a boil, add pkg of jello. Let cool to room temp.
Add buttermilk and cool whip. Refrigerate.
Reply:Yes! Down South we call that Ambrosia Salad! Let me see if I can find you a recipe. Be right back.
Here's a cranberry one:
1 (3 ounce) envelope unflavored gelatin
1 1/2 cups cold water, divided
4 cups fresh or frozen cranberries
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups dry red wine or cranberry juice
1 (6 ounce) package lemon gelatin
1 1/2 cups diced celery
3/4 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup sour cream
3/4 cup mayonnaise
celery leaves (to garnish)
1. Soften the unflavored gelatin in 1/2 cup cold water; set aside.
2. In a 3-quart saucepan, combine cranberries, sugar and wine or cranberry juice; heat to boiling, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes, stirring frequently.
3. Remove from heat. Add lemon gelatin and softened unflavored gelatin; stir until dissolved. Stir in remaining water. Chill until mixture is partially set.
4. Fold in celery and walnuts. Pour into a greased 8-cup mold; cover and chill until set.
5. Meanwhile, combine sour cream and mayonnaise; refrigerate until ready to serve.
6. To serve, unmold gelatin and top each serving with a dollop of the sourcream dressing. Garnish with celery leaves.
It's got your color, and your nuts, so that might be it... But we usually put the sourcream/mayo dressing right into the gelatin to make it all creamy.
You can also use red Jell-O, Cool whip, any kind of fruit, and some pecans or walnuts to make the easy version, like I always do. :)
Reply:I'm guessing it was probably strawberry jello, slightly set, beaten with either prepared Dream Whip or Cool Whip to which you would add sliced or crushed strawberries, perhaps pineapple, and crushed walnuts.
Another possibility would be strawberry jello (unprepared powder), mixed with crushed pineapple and it's juice, marshmallows, strawberries (sliced or chopped), and crushed walnuts.
One other possibility? Unprepared strawberry jello, cottage cheese, sliced or chopped strawberries, cool whip, and crushed walnuts.
Any of these are delicious, but the first will hold its shape in a mold. You will have to experiment with the other recipes... adding more jello powder so that it will hold its shape on the plate.
Another thought? Aspic.
